Cape Town's Town Two settlement

Rebuilding has begun in Cape Town’s Town Two settlement in Khayelitsha.

A fire in the early hours of Saturday morning destroyed 342 shacks, leaving 1 355 people homeless.

While the rebuilding has begun, residents say they’re tired of living in fear of shack fires.

Nceba Velani can’t move from the spot where his shack once stood, or risk losing a place to rebuild.

He’s one of the people who’ve lost everything.
You lose everything… Especially this time of the year. This is not nice. Because you don’t even know what to do, where to start, what to take out.”

The 29-year-old plumbing assistant said he is tired of living in fear of future fires.

The only solution that will satisfy him is a decent home.

“All we want is houses. Houses. Straight. Not temporary. A RDP Houses. Just houses,” Nceba said.

Authorities say they’re still investigating what caused the fire.

But locals said it was caused by a resident who was cooking on an open flame, at 3am in the morning.
