I’m not there yet: Serena Williams on forgiving her sister’s killer

Serena Williams

In a cover interview with TIME magazine, 36-year-old tennis icon Serena Williams revealed how she was not ready to forgive Robert Maxfield, who was convicted for her half-sisters murder Yetunde Price.

Serena said that she was about to take the court in San Jose when she discovered through Instagram that her sister’s killer had been released on parole. “I couldn’t shake it out of my mind,” she said speaking about the incident.

Yetunde was fatally murdered in a drive-by shooting in 2003, leaving behind her three children.

“It was hard because all I think about is her kids,” said Serena speaking on her late sister’s children, adding: “And what they meant to me. And how much I love them.” Robert Maxfield, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2006, was later freed on an early parole on the account of good behaviour. “No matter what, my sister is not coming back for good behaviour,” said the 23-time grand slam champion.

Serena, who recently revealed that she was still struggling with postpartum emotions, went on to speak on the importance of forgiveness.

“It’s unfair that she’ll never have an opportunity to hug me. But also …” she paused briefly before continuing, “the Bible talks about forgiveness.”

“I’m not there yet,” said Serena when asked if she had forgiven her sister’s killer.

“I would like to practice what I preach, and teach Olympia that as well. I want to forgive. I have to get there. I’ll be there,” she said.
