The court will decide whether the guardians of the four children who died in a fire in Alexandra on Sunday can attend their funeral.

The two sisters appeared in the Alexandra magistrate’s court on child negligence charges.

Their family is seeking permission to allow them to bury their children on Thursday.

Still coming to terms with the deaths of Nhlanhla, Mbali, Sandile and Amukelani, the Ngubeni family has now approached the court, seeking permission for the mothers to attend their children’s funerals on Thursday.

The two sisters, aged 28 and 30, remain in custody until 28 September when their bail application will be heard.

The family called for calm from the local community should the parents be allowed to attend the funeral.

On Tuesday, Gauteng Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, visited the family.

“It’s very sad that a parent can leave little ones in a house alone,” she said.

The MEC has also called on parents to hand over their children to social services if they feel they can’t take care of them.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday and the funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
