The Gauteng Health Department says an investigation into alleged corruption at Soweto’s Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is at its final stages.

A report will be presented to nursing unions this week.

Hundreds of workers affiliated to unions Denosa. Hospersa and Nehawu marched to the facility on Monday, demanding the report be released.

Unions say the health department has been taking advantage of its members and are calling on the government to make alternative arrangements for patients.

Denosa general secretary Yandisa Zungula said the march is about workers.

“Over the whole week we’ve been ensuring that services are not interrupted but we felt like the department is taking advantage of us.”

Police maintained a high presence, with officers given the mandate to protect the building in efforts prevent workers from vandalising the premises.

While some patients were attended to, others were turned away and asked to return later this week.

Unions say the Gauteng health department must take the blame for any disruptions to services and the lack of patient care.

They say workers will continue this go-slow until their demands are met.
