Nelson Mandela Bay’s Mayor has been asked to step down following allegations of nepotism and corruption. Political parties in the metro are calling for Gary van Niekerk to resign as mayor after he’d been accused of breaching the code of conduct.
Under Van Niekerk’s leadership, the city has accumulated the highest amount of unauthorised, fruitless, irregular and wasteful expenditure.
The Democratic Alliance is at the forefront of those parties calling for the mayor to be axed. Eastern Cape DA leader Andrew Whitfield has accused Van Niekerk of abusing his power as mayor.
