Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina has survived a motion of no confidence that was brought against him on Thursday morning at the Ekurhuleni Council.

The motion was supported by opposition political parties including the DA and the EFF, but the parties failed to garner enough support for the motion to succeed.

The vote was unlikely to succeed because on Wednesday Masina had held a media briefing with the party’s coalition partners who all expressed their support for him ahead of the motion.
Hundreds of ANC members dressed in ANC regalia came out in support of Masina including ANC provincial chairperson David Makhura. DA supports were also seen protesting outside Ekurhuleni Council Chambers in Germiston.

Ekurhuleni is the only metro that is being governed by the ANC in Gauteng. The party lost Joburg and Tshwane during the local government elections in 2016. The party was able to stay in control of Ekurhuleni through coalition partnerships which include the AIC.

The DA brought the motion against Masina largely based on allegations of poor service delivery and his failure to deal with corruption within the metro
Makhura celebrated the outcome of the failed motion with ANC supporters outside the city’s council chambers.

The Gauteng premier accused the DA of corruption in Tshwane and said the metro was in financial distress due to Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga’s leadership.
