Classes have been suspended at a high school in Kwamakhutha outside Durban, after two pupils were stabbed to death inside school premises.
The attack was allegedly carried out by a fellow pupil.
The fight is believed to be part of ongoing turf wars in the township.
Mangaliso Mbatha, an 18-year-old grade 10 pupil, died while trying to save a friend who was under attack.
His friend, 17-year-old grade 11 pupil Sihle Mngadi, was also stabbed to death.
Mbatha’s uncle, says his nephew died while trying to protect his friend.
“It’s believed two boys were fighting, and Mangaliso came in trying to save his friend who they were trying to stab. He pulled at his friend and got stabbed in the back, and that’s how he died,” said Mondli Dlamini.
The provincial education department has suspended classes until Monday.
The department says learners will also be offered psychological counselling.
The suspect, who is known to the community, is still at large.
Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
“We have opened two counts of murder for further investigation and the suspect is known in this incident but is not yet arrested because he’s still in the run and we are also appealing to anyone who might have information about his whereabouts to please come forward and give us information,” said KZN police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.
Police have been deployed around the school, and a meeting has been scheduled for Sunday to update parents.
