Police Minister applauds officers for foiling CIT robbery

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has applauded officers for intercepting a cash-in-transit robbery in Khayelitsha last night, where 8 suspects were killed and 5 others were arrested.

Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says a multi-disciplinary team of Priority Crime Investigation members, the Special Task Force and intelligence operatives followed up on information about a possible cash-in-transit robbery.

Potelwa says the suspects opened fire on the officers when they were approached. She says police retaliated killing eight of the suspects.

Seven AK-47 rifles, two R-5 rifles, one R-4 rifle, a dash prod rifle, two pistols and three explosive charges were found in the possession of the suspects. Mnchunu says it is the job of the police to intercept crimes.

“We welcome what police did in Khayelitsha yesterday. Because they got intelligence information about what would have been an attack on business, they were planning to attack and they were intercepted. That is the duty of the police to intercept crimes so that we bring the number down.”

“But we also welcome the seizure of those firearms … the rifles including an R-1 and so on. Those are high caliber weapons including pistols and all that…”
