KZN residents warned about salmonella outbreak

At least 20 people have been hospitalised following salmonella poisoning in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Lancet Laboratories alerted doctors in the region about cases in both children and adults.

Among the items affected, according to tests, include orange juice, eggs, fresh vegetables, frozen dinners, dairy products and peanut butter.

The laboratory says non-typhoidal salmonella species are the leading cause of bacterial foodborne illnesses.

Symptoms vary from mild to severe diarrhoea, vomiting and fever.

It comes just months after a listeriosis outbreak claimed over 200 lives in South Africa.

Officials have urged people to practice proper hygiene and food safety.

Food needs to be kept below 4 degrees Celsius.

People have also been urged to wash their hands and fresh foods before consuming.

The public is also advised to properly cook food until it’s well done.
