Civic organisations have called on South Africans to emulate the resilience and courage demonstrated by the women of 1956.
The women marched to the Union buildings in Pretoria to protest against the unjust apartheid laws.
Among those who led the march were Helen Joseph, Lillian Ngoyi, Sophie De Bruyn, Rahima Moosa and Albertina Sisulu.
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation alongside the Sophie and Henry De Bruyn Foundation held a commemorative event in Johannesburg to pay respect to the women.
The two Foundations paid homage to the late stalwarts ahead of Women’s Day to be held on Friday, August 9.
A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the graves of the stalwarts around Johannesburg.
