Tefu Mashamaite

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender and captain Tefu Mashamaite has discussed how the main improvement in the team is the defence.

Last season former head coach Arthur Zwane struggled with keeping it tight at the back but their new signings have already proven to have made a difference this time around, particularly with a few clean sheets in victories and stalemates. The 0-0 draws were naturally disappointing for the attackers, but it’s the defenders who have received the bulk of the praise.

Mashamaite was the last captain to lift a trophy for Amakhosi and in an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, he believes if their defence continues like this then things can eventually turn around at the club.

“I think the signings of the two new central defenders have made the difference. They are not conceding as many simple goals as they did last season,” Mashamaite told Soccer Laduma.

“Yes, they should sign a striker who can score week in week out but so far their defence has been the difference. You know if you have a good defence then it’s easy for you to collect points whether in a draw or a win.

“Because it doesn’t help that you score but then at the same time concede a lot. As long as you can have a good last line in defence and good defenders, then your job of winning the game is already half-done.

“So, if they can continue playing like this they have the chance of winning some silverware this season,” Mashamaite told the publication.

Amakhosi have added Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe to their central defence, and these are the two players Mashamaite are referring to who have done so well since the start of the season.
