President Cyril Ramaphosa has fired SARS Commissioner Tom Moyane. On Tuesday, Moyane’s attorneys wrote to Ramaphosa rejecting the Nugent Commission’s recommendations.
This after the commission submitted its interim report with its main recommendation being that Moyane be removed.
In a letter to Moyane, Ramaphosa said the Nugent interim report, “paints a deeply concerning picture of the current state of SARS and the reckless mismanagement which characterised your tenure as Commissioner of SARS.
“Of further, and in many ways greater, concern is your refusal to meaningfully participate in the SARS Commission in order to assist with identifying the root causes of the systemic failures at SARS and ways in which to arrest these,” he said
Moyane was suspended in March.
The 30-page report said Moyane dismantled vital structures, one of them being the investigation unit.
He tried to stop the Commission of Inquiry when it was in its first week.
