Leaving the biggest stage would also allow him to play in more T20 leagues around the world – and on Friday, the 34-year-old announced that he will be turning out in the Pakistan Super League in February 2019.
After retiring from the Proteas and international cricket, AB de Villiers said he wanted to spend more time with his young and growing family. “Hi, it’s AB de Villiers here. The Pakistan Super League has grown into one of the top T20 tournaments around the world,” the former South African captain said in a video message on his Twitter account.
“It has given Pakistanis much to cheer about. I’ve certainly enjoyed watching some of the PSL games on television in recent years. “But 2019 will be different. In 2019, I will be participating in the PSL. I certainly can’t wait, and I will see you there.
“Aap ka shukria (thank you).” De Villiers has been a stalwart figure in the IPL for the Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he enjoys cult-like status alongside fellow RCB superstar Virat Kohli.
He has previously stated that he will continue playing for the Titans in South Africa. “We are delighted with the signing of De Villiers for the Pakistan Super League,” Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani told the PSL website on Friday.
“He is a modern-day great, and he will add immense value to the tournament. His involvement in PSL will also provide great learning opportunities for our youngsters.”
