Bafana Bafana has to win against Libya – Delron Buckley

Delron Buckley

Bafana are in Durban preparing for Saturday’s second Group E encounter against the Libyans, who is a relatively unknown entity for the South Africans, with the sides having never faced off since the latter’s readmission to international football in 1992.

Former Bafana Bafana winger Delron Buckley feels it’s all about the result and not the type of football played, ahead of South Africa’s African Nations Cup qualifier against Libya.

And former South African international Buckley, who scored 10 goals in 72 outings for the national team between 1998 and 2012, feels it’s only the result that counts against the world’s 101st-ranked side.

Bafana Coach

“It’s a home game in Durban, so we should win the game,” he tells KickOff.com. “I’m sure Baxter will select a good-quality team because he’s obviously looking for a win. But for me, it doesn’t matter how they play – they must just win. I’d rather we play nonsense and win than play good football and lose, because that’s what we want – we want to win, we don’t care how they do it. And when you win, you have the nation behind you, the players feel good, and it breeds a winning mentality until that becomes automatic.”

Amid varying opinions regarding Bafana coach Stuart Baxter, Buckley has thrown his weight behind the Brit, insisting he has what it takes to bring success to the national team.

“Baxter is a good coach,” he says. “He would not have won four or five trophies with Kaizer Chiefs, so he knows how to handle the African mentality while bringing in his English concepts. So it’s a good mixture, which I think he proved at Chiefs. So he just needs to prove it again now in the national team, and I’m sure he will.”

Kick-off at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday is set for 15h00, with the match televised on SuperSport4.
