David Makhura

Premier David Makhura announced the names while briefing the media after he inspected the scene of the fire, which he described as “a disaster”.

The City of Johannesburg has released the names of the firefighters who died trying to put out the fire at the  Gauteng health department’s offices on Wednesday. The fallen firemen are Simphiwe Moropane, 28, Mduduzi Ndlovu, 40, and Khathutshelo Muedi, 37.

“I am more than a shame when there are lives lost. I have asked all Gauteng mayors in the metros to come and assist,” he said.  Firefighters from Ekurhuleni OR Tambo and Tshwane were called to assist to extinguish the fire. On Thursday, firefighters battled to put down the fire that has been raging for over 24 hours because the building does not comply with the Emergency Services by-laws.

Earlier on Thursday Makhura visited eight firefighters who were receiving medical attention at Milpark Hospital.
