Train

Prasa provincial spokesman Zama Nomnganga said four cars and a train coach were burned. He said an office was also vandalised.

Train passengers in KZN will be stranded today as Prasa has suspended operations. The decision was made after a group of angry commuters attacked staff in Umlazi, south of Durban, on Friday.

Nomnganga said management decided to suspend all operations in the province for the safety of staff and property. “We are very disturbed by these people’s thuggery. We don’t understand why they are doing this to us because buses and taxis also come late but no one attacks them,” he said.

A passenger who witnessed the incident said people were furious when the train didn’t arrive at 6 am. He said as people gathered at the station, no staff came out to explain what was going on.

“We don’t support what these people did but Prasa must take the blame, too. People buy weekly and monthly tickets, so if they don’t get a service they paid for they will get angry,” he said. Nomnganga said the delays were caused by old equipment as the trains had not been replaced for a long time.
